Edge Computing

Running computation close to where data is produced or consumed, instead of sending everything to a distant central region first.

Edge computing moves work out of a handful of central regions and toward the places where data originates or gets used. The motivation is physical: light in fiber covers roughly 200 kilometers per millisecond, and each network a packet crosses adds its own delay, so a round trip to a distant region costs time that no amount of software optimization recovers. Placing computation at the edge node nearest the work removes the trip rather than shortening it.

In a data business the pattern applies at both ends. Inbound, listening at the edge means an event is received where it surfaces and stamped with event time immediately. Outbound, serving from the point of presence nearest the client means the last hop is short for a desk in London and a training cluster in Virginia alike. Doing the evaluation in between while the record is in motion is what keeps quality from being paid for in latency.
