Satellite imagery is optical imaging of the Earth's surface from orbiting satellites, and as an alternative-data source it lets analysts observe physical activity directly: cars in a retailer's parking lot, containers stacked at a port, oil stored in tanks, construction in progress. It measures the world as it is, ahead of the filings and surveys that describe it later.
Two properties define its usefulness. Spatial resolution sets how small an object you can distinguish - the difference between counting buildings and counting cars - and revisit rate sets how often a given place is re-imaged, which caps how timely the signal can be. The imagery itself is only the raw material; the value comes from computer-vision extraction that turns pixels into consistent, timestamped counts you can track over time, and from correcting for clouds and seasonal light.
