An active radar imaging technique that sees through cloud and darkness - useful where optical satellites are blind.
Synthetic aperture radar is an active remote-sensing method: the satellite emits microwave pulses and measures their return, synthesizing a large virtual antenna from the sensor's motion to produce high-resolution imagery. Because it supplies its own illumination and uses wavelengths that pass through clouds, SAR works at night and in weather that blinds an optical satellite.
That all-weather, day-night capability is exactly why it matters for economic signals that cannot wait for a clear sky. SAR is used to gauge crude-oil storage from the height of floating tank roofs, to detect flooding and ground movement, and to monitor activity that optical imagery would miss for days behind cloud cover. It reads differently from a photograph - measuring surface roughness and structure rather than color - so extracting a signal from it is its own specialty.
